The Mistress of Ceremonies

I've been thinking about this section of the blog for a long time. I feel that, more than the posts, if you like author of a blog you're reading, you'll be more inclined to stick with them. If they come off as fake, or too full of themselves, you'll see if in their posts as well. I hope that you read this section first before my posts so perhaps you can get a feel of my character and feel more inclined to read on.

The basics. As the name suggests I am a lolita in college (though soon I'll need to get a new title as I will be graduating in 2012). I first started "studying" lolita in 2006, but I had an affinity for Victorian fashion long before that, and renaissance fashion even before that. Even though I've been a lover of the fashion for a while now, I'm not a lifestyler...because I'm too poor to buy a lot of lolita dresses. I have learned to sew though...but I need more practice. I'm also not a lifestyler because I find that my schoolwork takes over too often, and I stress, and I loose sight of the true elegant light within me.

But I plan to change that, and that starts with this blog.

I also periodically design lolita clothes and sew my own... sometimes, if they turn out well, I post them on this very blog

A few things that have nothing necessarily to do with lolita, but that you may find interesting. I'm majoring in psychology, which I suppose makes me somewhat different than other lolitas I've seen. I'm African-American...which makes it a bit hard to find makeup tutorials. I have an obsession with pink hair. My favorite style of art is Art Nouveau, and I love documentaries. And Sailor Moon. The patron saint of lolitas is Saint Dolores, but my personal saint is Sailor Moon

A meme to tie up some loose ends. This meme has been floating around for a while...but I'm just now getting back into the forums, this blog, and loltia in general so forgive me for raising it from the dead.

1. Best lolita fashion advice you've ever received?

When I was going to meet Hakuei, the ladies at Lolita Fashion.org Forum told me to try dressing in sweet lolita to get his attention. Unfortunately, I own no sweet items...so I went with aristocrat. Otherwise, I haven't had many style tips.

2. Style Icons?

More than anything else, other lolitas. When I see people who have put together a good lolita outfit, I'm inspired to wear it. But I love getting inspiration for clothing designs from Victorian paintings. And Kira Imai.

3. Describe your personal style.

I started out as a gothic lolita (kuro or with a splash of red if I could help it) and in my heart, I'll always be. But I'm moving less towards the delicate hints of lace and more towards antique floral patterns and ruffles. I love the classic lolita style...everything is so smooth and to the point that is practically screams class. It's so refined and so beautiful.

4. Favorite designers/brands?

I love Victorian Maiden, Juiliette et Justine, and Alice and the Pirates. I only wish I could fit/afford them. That, though, is why I also love Fan plus Friend and QutieLand--they're way cheaper than brand and have a wider range of style and sizes.

5. Most cherished items?

I have this and I don't wear it nearly enough. In my version, the skirt is red and the blouse is black...it's beautiful.

6. Most used items?

I have a headband with a bow that just goes with everything. Even when I'm not wearing lolita I wear it to give a nice femmy flair to an outfit.

7. I feel best wearing?

Corsets and tights or socks.

8. The first thing I look for in another lolita's outfit...

I try to see if I can identify the brand if it appears to be brand. If it isn't (and I muster up the courage to ask them about it) that gives me the ability to add a new off-brand site to my repertoire...and hopefully a new place to get good quality loli clothes on the cheap. I then I run over a mental checklist of the particular points of a lolita outfit: do they have something in their hair? Is their makeup (or lack there of) nice? Are they wearing a nice blouse with their JSK or just a t-shirt? If it's just a t-shirt, are they trying to go for a casual look or are they just missing some items from their wardrobe? Et cetera.

9. Lolita fashion rule you never break?

Always wear a petticoat. If I'm not wearing a petti, I'm not lolita.

10. Never caught wearing?

Alice bows. Seriously, they look terrible.

11. Dress to impress who?

Hmm...Random people I've never met on the internet. I just want some praise for my outfits :) But that, of course, isn't the only reason I wear lolita. I love the style, I love the beauty of it, so I dress to impress myself as well.

12. Your next "must have" purchase?

A petticoat that isn't yellow. And various dresses, socks, skirts, shoes...et cetera.

13. Favorite type of head accessory?

I love tea hats, they're so cute! But I also love sidebows, and since my hair is shorter now I'm really going to love getting a collection of barrettes.

14. Favorite cut of clothing (shirring, high waist, princess seams, etc.)?

Princess seams and low waists. Since I have an hourglass figure, I need my waste to be defined or else I look frumpy, especially when wearing a petticoat.

15. Current obsession?

Anything classic lolita and emerald green.

16. Best lolita fashion advice you can give to anyone:

Buy clothes based on what will fit and look good on you not what looks good on the model. Also, when you're starting out, regardless of what style you decide on, get some blouses and skirts before you get that 300+ dollar OP. You'll get more bang for your buck.

There is more, but you'll just have to read my blog to find out about it.

Where you'll find me around the internet.

I'm also on the lolita fashion forum mentioned above as lace_and_chains_

Well, that's the end. If you want to know anything else, ask me and I'll probably answer. I hope you've enjoyed my little autobiography. Now, enjoy the blog~!
